Competency Evaluations
A competency evaluation assesses whether a defendant has a rational and factual understanding of the criminal proceedings against them and whether they can assist their attorney in their own defense. These evaluations are ordered by the court when there is reason to doubt the defendant's competency.
Sanity Evaluations
A sanity evaluation (also known as a criminal responsibility evaluation) assesses the defendant's mental state at the time of the alleged offense. The court orders these evaluations when the defendant's mental state at the time of the crime is at issue.
Sex Offender Evaluations
Sex offender evaluations are comprehensive psychosexual assessments ordered by the court to evaluate individuals convicted of or charged with sexual offenses. These evaluations inform sentencing, treatment recommendations, and risk management.
Guardianship & Conservatorship
Guardianship and conservatorship evaluations assess an individual's capacity to manage their personal affairs and/or finances. Courts order these evaluations when there is concern about an individual's ability to care for themselves or manage their estate.
Risk Assessments
Risk assessments use structured professional judgment to evaluate the likelihood of future violent, sexual, or general criminal behavior. These evaluations assist courts in making decisions about sentencing, release, and supervision.
Psychological Evaluations
General psychological evaluations involve comprehensive psychological testing and clinical interviews to assess cognitive functioning, personality, mental health diagnoses, and other psychological factors relevant to legal proceedings.
